My interest in geometric abstraction comes from Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican architecture, in which buildings and constructions denote the place's symbolic importance. Function, knowledge and creativity were not separate in these societies. Maya's astronomical and mathematical knowledge was part of its holistic universe view. During spring and fall equinoxes, the shadows cast in the Kukulcan pyramid make visible an astronomical event. The prints' abstract geometric compositions were inspired by cardboard constructions I made and the shadows cast by its panels.

The characters were made of tights and cushion fill. Through photographic manipulation, they were distorted and forced to fit in square shapes, which resonate with some of the constricted modernist art narratives and traditional western ideas of time and space.

Thinking From The Square presents the undifferentiated vision of real and symbolic spaces. Blind embossing provides a recessed surface in some pieces, obtained by pressing a metal plate without ink.

I also produced several cardboard origami sculptures; their white surface offered me a rich play with light in a series of photographs.  They were part of the work's process and usually presented alongside the prints.
