Jacob’s ladder, a traditional Mexican toy, inspired me to explore the idea of progress; its several wooden blocks held by fabric strips unfold by gravity, giving the impression of advancing. I also made a ladder out of pieces of wooden frames, referencing the Mexican toy called ‘Juego de tablas,’ in which a small figure stumbles down a ladder.

In Portals, objects exist in diverse realms; in some cases, elements transmute when entering a different pictorial or physical space. The compression of time, space, and historical art references confers a collage quality.
